Query Dean: A Display Font That Earns Its Space
Practical Designer Notes You’ll Actually Use
- Test it in black and white first. Query Dean’s contrast and structure shine without color crutches—this reveals whether it’s truly working or just looking slick in your mood board.
- Check readability at real sizes. Set it at 24px on a product label mockup. At 48px on a mobile ad. If letters start to blur or compete, scale up—or step back.
- Compare uppercase vs. lowercase in context. That ‘a’ has a lovely open bowl; the ‘A’ has a sharp apex. One may suit your brand voice better than the other.
- Review spacing—kerning and tracking—before finalizing. Some pairs (like ‘To’ or ‘We’) benefit from slight manual adjustment. Don’t assume auto-kerning is enough.
- Try it beside key typefaces in your toolkit: a sturdy serif (e.g., Playfair Display), a clean sans serif (e.g., Lato), a relaxed script font, a grounded handwritten font, and another display font. Does it hold its own? Does it create contrast without clashing?
- Confirm commercial licensing. Query Dean is a premium font—verify usage rights for client work, digital products, and resale items like Canva templates or printable design bundles. Don’t assume “personal use only” covers your small business.
